Life Balance Institute

Phillip Moffit
Dear Colleague,

For the last 20 years I have been engaged with leaders like you in a process I call “life balancing” in which I guide them through a strategic analysis of their lives based on their core values.

I’ve done this work primarily on a one-to-one basis through the Life Balance Institute, which I founded to help leaders achieve more sustainable lives.

Leadership in our country is in crisis. Top leaders have short tenures, struggle with burnout, lose their sense of purpose and enthusiasm, and often neglect their own sense of well-being. This is disastrous not only for the organizations they serve and the people who work with them it also makes for a less than satisfying life! The solution is for individual leaders to learn the art and science of sustainable leadership.

I offer a series of need-based programs tailored to address your specific personal and leadership situation, including programs for helping you navigate changes and transitions in your life, for developing a critical path for dealing with a specific life or work challenge, for finding a renewed sense of meaning in your life, and for re-invigorating your sense of purpose and excitement as a leader. To my knowledge, no other programs of this nature are offered anywhere else. It is only because of my particular combination of background and interests that I am qualified to make such an offering.

I spent 20 years as a successful entrepreneur and creative leader in the publishing industry, which included owning controlling interest in Esquire magazine where I was C.E.O. and editor-in chief. I left the media world at the age of 40 with the goal of creating a “third” life for myself while still relatively young. I was fortunate to have achieved my initial goals so early in life, but continuing to do what I had already accomplished in order to acquire more money, glory, and power did not motivate me. So I set out on a multi-year journey to discover what gave my life meaning and how to deal with the unique challenges that those who achieve great success inevitably encounter. To my surprise, while I was sorting out these questions for myself, other leaders started calling me seeking advice and direction in their lives. Out of that, I eventually created the Life Balance Institute.

What makes life balance work so effective is that my advice and insights are based on having “been there” myself along with the knowledge base I’ve acquired from my own explorations. I know the right questions to ask; I know what critical path is; I know how to balance the strategic and tactical aspects of leadership; and I know the inner workings of a leader’s mind.

I do not call myself a life coach, counselor, or management consultant. Instead I see myself as a strategic analyst, someone who works with the blueprints of your personal and organizational life and helps you revise the architecture in such a manner that it sustains you as a leader and a person.

My reward for doing life balance work is witnessing your development and knowing that helping you to be a better leader is the most effective way I have of serving the greater good of our society. If you have balance in your life, if you have the capacity for sustained leadership, if you have a clear vision for yourself, then all those you lead will also benefit, and they in turn will affect many others. For this reason I feel privileged to be part of your development process.

Sincerely,

Phillip Moffitt
